What Does a Life Coach Do?

What Does a Life Coach Do

The work of a life coach is incredibly varied, and the services they offer will differ from client to client, but the ultimate, overarching goal is always the same – to improve people’s lives.

Quite what form this takes will depend entirely on the client and what they want to achieve.

Getting to know the client

To determine the right path to take, the first step will always be one of investigation.

To begin with, a good life coach will spend plenty of time just chatting with the client. An informal chat will help the client feel relaxed with their coach, they’ll get to know each other and feel at ease in each other’s company.

The discussion will focus on the client’s past, present and future. Together they will look at what has led the client to this point.

What have been the positives, what would they change if they could go back in time?

They’ll discuss the client’s current situation. What are they doing now? How do they feel about their current situation?

Then, most importantly, the focus will turn to the future. Where would the client like to be in life? What changes would they like to see? These changes could be a different career, a better work – life balance, or personal changes such as an increase in self-confidence or to be more motivated.

A life coach may also use personality testing techniques to get an even deeper understanding of their client.

Setting goals for a life journey

The next step will be to determine goals and to put in place a pathway that will lead the person to where they ultimately want to be.

A good life coach will work with their client to create a series of goals that define a clear path. Goals that are realistic and attainable.

Working towards achieving the first goal

Once the path to fulfilment has been put in place, and both the client and coach agree it’s the right way to go, work can begin on accomplishing the initial goal, taking the first steps on the journey.

What happens now will entirely depend on the type of goal that has been set, but let’s look at some of the ways in which a life coach will help their clients…

Career Coaching

A life coach can help you in your career as well.

They can assist you in finding a job, working with you to perfect your resume and write a great cover letter.

They can also help you to find the perfect career that suits your interests, skills and personality.

If you’re looking to change career, a life coach can offer you practical help, such as suggesting the best online job boards to use, but they can also help you work on your self-confidence or learn new skills that will put you at an advantage in a competitive job market.

Relationship Coaching

Life coaches can also offer invaluable advice concerning interpersonal relationships.

It may be that a romantic relationship has ended and you’re struggling to cope with it, or it could be that you’re looking for love and want help navigating the tricky world of dating. Or maybe you’ve moved to a new town and would like some help and advice about how to establish a new circle of friends, or perhaps you’re a manager looking to learn new skills for improved interaction with your work colleagues.

A life coach can help you improve your ability to build solid relationships of all types.

Boosting positivity and motivation

For many goals, achievement becomes much easier when you are motivated and have a positive attitude.

Perhaps you’re looking to achieve a fitness goal. You’d love to lose weight or accomplish a dream such as running a marathon. Your life coach will have a wealth of advice and useful techniques to teach you, to put you in the best frame of mind to focus on your goals.

Or maybe you’re looking to achieve a more spiritual goal, to raise your happiness levels and to be the very best person you possibly can be. Your coach can help you learn self-awareness and mindfulness techniques that can truly enhance your personal growth.

Ongoing assessment

A life coach will also work with you throughout your life journey.

Of course, you can simply hire a life coach for a one-off session, but you’ll get the most value if you keep in touch and work with them on a longer-term basis.

By doing this, they can work with you to assess how you’re getting along with the goals you previously set. Nothing is ever set in stone. Perhaps the goals need to be adjusted as you, and your life situation change.

If you’re not accomplishing your goals as quickly as you’d hoped, your coach can help you to look both inwards, and at external factors, to see why this is the case, and work on the best way to move forward.

How to choose the right life coach

Life coaching is an unregulated profession, and so there are many coaches out there with different skill levels.

You’ll also find life coaches that specialize in a particular area. So how do you find the right coach for your needs?

Do your research. Look into several life coaches in your area. Read reviews, and ask if they have any proof of their credentials such as industry qualifications and life coach certifications.

If you’re looking for help in a particular area, perhaps career advancement or relationship building, make sure your chosen coach is well-experienced in that aspect of life coaching.

Have an initial chat and trust your judgement. In the same way that you don’t become firm friends with everyone you meet, not everyone will gel with a particular life coach.

Remember, you’re going to need to be frank and honest with this person. You may be talking about personal or emotional issues. Do you feel comfortable with them? First impressions and gut reactions can be important here. Don’t be scared to take your time choosing your life coach. It’s an important decision, and only if you get it right, will you get the results you want.

A life coach can be an invaluable asset

A life coach offers help and advice in so many areas.

They’re like a professional friend that only ever gives great advice, and only ever has your best interests at heart.

With the right life coach by your side, nearly all aspects of life become a little easier, you are happier and more contented, and you feel confident that you will achieve your goals.
