Can anyone become a career coach?

The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to go back to school and study a degree-level course, or go through any certification processes in order to work as a career coach.

It’s an unregulated industry, and so, while theoretically anyone can set up a career coaching business, many career coaches have previous experience of climbing to the top of the career ladder, or are simply enthusiastic about helping others do so.

While there is no legal requirement to have any qualification to work as a career coach, if you want to stand out from the crowd, and prove to potential clients that you have the skills needed to really help them on their way to job success, you could look at earning your career coach certification.

How to become a certified career coach

By earning career coach certification, you will have the skills needed to excel in your new career, and the credentials to showcase your abilities to attract new clients.

While you may already know how to get to the top of the career ladder, you may not yet have the skills to be able to adequately convey this knowledge to others.

By taking a course in career coaching, you’ll expand your knowledge and expertise and develop your skills.

As a certified career coach, you will be able to give the very best, most up-to-date practical advice such as how to search for jobs online, how to create an eye-catching resume, how to apply for promotions, and much more.

Find the perfect career coach course for your needs

Becoming a career coach doesn’t have to mean giving up work and enrolling in full-time education.

Of course, this is often not a financially viable option anyway. Luckily, there are many courses that will teach you how to become a career coach, courses that can be taken in your spare time.

You’ll also find courses that can be completed remotely, from the comfort of your own home.

If you take the time to look, checking out online opportunities and local colleges, you’re sure to find a course that you can fit around your current job and other commitments.

Just be sure to pick a course that results in certification, and that certificate is a superb way to prove your career coaching credentials.

Take your time, get it right, be the best

As a career-oriented person, you know the value of preparing, and by becoming a certified career coach before you leave your current role to start your new business, you’re giving yourself the time necessary to learn all you need to become a great career coach.

This is important, as personal recommendations are the key to success in this industry, and so you need to do an amazing job, right from the very first client.

Consider specializing – find a niche

How you approach this career is entirely up to you, but you should think about whether or not you want to become a career coach specializing in a particular profession.

It may be that you’ve spent your entire career working your way up the ranks in one industry. When you know that industry inside out, you’ll be of huge benefit to anyone looking to get started in that same role or grow their career in that industry, just like you did.

But of course, you need to think about whether or not this is too limiting.

Is it a very large industry? Will narrowing down your potential clients like this be feasible? If your niche is just too… niche, then you may want to expand your services, and of course, once you’ve become a certified career coach, your invaluable knowledge can be very helpful to anyone looking to advance their career, regardless of the target industry.

Spread the word and advertise

When you’re becoming a career coach, you need to suddenly be an expert in so many areas, and that includes marketing.

These are exciting times, and we know you have the drive to stand up to the challenge.

Whether you take charge of all this yourself, or you choose to hire a skilled marketing professional is up to you. Or perhaps you’ll try a combination of both and see what works best for you.

Set up a website and print business cards

At the end of the day, you need to get your name out there, and you need to portray a professional image.

A good website is a must, and don’t forget those all-important business cards. You never know who you might meet who may be in need of your services. A business card acts as an aide memoir and directs them to your website where they can learn more about what you can offer them.

Hit social media

Social media is a great way to get your name out there, so take advantage of it and ensure you have a presence across all the most popular social media channels.

Try to find the perfect balance within your posts, offering useful advice, while promoting your business.

Being too salesy, and sending out posts too frequently can be off-putting. If you’re up for learning more, there are plenty of excellent social media marketing courses and tutorials out there that will make sure you’re on the right track.

Build your business through recommendations

As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and everyone has to start somewhere.

Every career coach started out with just one client, it’s what you do then that will make the difference.

When you put your all into helping your client, they will be successful in their own career, and they will always be grateful. This gratitude often leads to recommendations, and so your business grows from there.

So is it time to take the first step to becoming a certified career coach? There’s really no time like the present – good luck!
